Music & Me

Hello! My name is Jaiden Smith, and I'm a freshman at Converse. I am majoring in dance with a minor in psychology. I am originally from Lancaster, California but moved to Florence, South Carolina in the 4th grade. Some of my hobbies include playing The Sims, singing, dancing (of course), and watching reality shows that involve drama. Music has always been a part of my life, and I grew up listening to artists like Beyonce, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and The Pussycat Dolls. Artists like Beyonce and Michael Jackson inspired me to start dancing. I also love musicals, with some of my favorites being Grease, Six, Mamma Mia, and Chicago.

1. Current Go-To Song

A few months ago, I was watching Coachella and first listened to "DREAM-GIRLS" by Camila Cabello. I never got the name of the song until it came on it through my Spotify shuffle one day, I ended up listening to the entire album, which was also amazing. This song has become such a significant part of my daily routine as of recently. I enjoy listening to it at any time of the day - be it in the shower, while going to class, with one earbud during class, in the shower, and while I wind down before going to bed. This song instantly boosts my mood every time it comes on. What I love most about this song is the unique usage of the sample from "Shawty Is Da Shit" by The Dream.

2. Meaningful Song

A meaningful song to me is Drowned World / Substitute for Love by Madonna. Growing up, this album was all I listened to and what truly made me fall in love with music as a whole. Every time I got home from school, no matter how I was feeling I would play this song. It has gotten me through some of the hardest times in my life and without it I'm not sure if I would even have a song I love this much. The piercing lyrics paired with the somberness of the instrumental is an experience great enough to evoke emotion out of anyone. About 2 years ago I told my mother for every major event of my life I need this song to be played at least once and so far she has fulfilled that. Without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to.

3. Not My Style

Now don't get me wrong, I have a deep appreciation for all genres of music and I generally enjoy a wide variety of musical styles. However, this particular song that has never quite hit for me. I have made multiple attempts to like it, but have been unable to get past the first 30 seconds. What also turns me off to this song is how widespread it is. It feels like this song has been everywhere, in advertisements, TikTok videos, and all over social media. The overexposure of this song has made me gain dislike towards it. I must clarify that I recognize the talent of the artists behind the song, as I have enjoyed other pieces from their discography. This one song simply doesn't move me except for when I go to turn it off.

  1. The Camila Cabello song is really good it's not personally my style but her lyrics are blended with the beat really nicely and it makes a good vibe for the song. I love the last minute of the Madonna song, everything coming together for what felt like a grand finale is beautifully played and stands the test of time. I personally think songs that become so popular that they start getting played in grocery stores and places similar just lose their flare, becoming less enjoyable.

  2. First off I would like to say I too am a big fan of BeyoncĂ© and have her newest album on repeat like everyday. I do have to agree with you that I am not a fan of that BTS song or K-pop in general it’s something I have never been able to vibe with. It’s crazy that you say this song has been overplayed because I actually have never heard it on any social media platform. My favorite song you included above would have to be “ Dream-Girls” by Camilla Cabello I feel like this song gives off summer playlists vibes and is a great mood-boosting song and I see why you have it in your rotation.

  3. Hi Jaiden! I've never really listened to Madonna before but after hearing this song, I thought it was so beautiful! I went and looked up the lyrics and meaning behind the song and it's just so beautiful how she says she'd rather give up fame so she can be with the ones she truly loves. I think that one is probably my favorite. I also have to agree because KPOP is not really my thing either. This song specifically was played so much when it came out that I can understand how overexposure can make you dislike it. Thank you for sharing!
